Instagram Links Not Opening in App? iPhone & Android Fix
You tap an Instagram link in a message or a browser and it opens in Chrome or Safari instead of the Instagram app. Or the other way round. Both come down to one setting, and both take a minute to fix.

A link to an Instagram post, reel or profile should open the Instagram app. When it opens in Chrome or Safari instead, the phone is not handing the link to the app. That handoff is controlled by your phone’s settings, not by the link, and it can break after an update or a reinstall.
On Android
- Turn on supported links. Go to Settings → Apps → Instagram → Open by default (the name varies by phone) and switch on Open supported links.
- Check the address list. In the same screen, make sure instagram.com is ticked under the supported web addresses.
- Update Instagram. Old versions often lose the link handoff. Update it from the Play Store.
- Check the default browser. If a browser is set to open every link itself, it can take the link before Instagram does.
On iPhone
- Press and hold the link, then choose Open in Instagram.
- Don’t paste it into Safari’s address bar. A link typed or pasted there is treated as a normal website and never hands off to an app. Tap it from Messages, Notes or Mail instead.
- Update or reinstall Instagram. Reinstalling re-registers the app to open Instagram links.
- Open it in Safari once. If Safari shows a banner or a link to open the app, accepting it can make iOS remember the choice.
Do you share links on Instagram yourself? Your visitors’ phone settings are theirs, but where your link lands is yours. Linkamy sends them to a real browser. Free, no card.

Everything above is what a visitor’s phone decides, so you can’t force it from your side. What you control is where your link points. A bio link that sends the visitor to a page which then opens in the right place saves them from fiddling with settings they don’t know exist.
- Link to a page you control rather than directly to a profile or post, so one short link works for everyone.
- Test from a real phone, from the places your audience taps: a DM, a story, a comment.
Linkamy’s links hand the tap to Safari or Chrome for pages that need a real browser (automatic on Android, one clean tap on iOS). Free to start, no card.
