The problem

Why Apple Pay doesn’t work in the Instagram or TikTok browser

The Apple Pay button that works everywhere else on your site is just… missing when someone arrives from Instagram or TikTok. It’s not your checkout. It’s the browser the tap landed in.

Apple Pay and Google Pay both depend on the browser they run in. Safari and Chrome expose the APIs that let a checkout page detect a saved wallet and render the button. The in-app browser inside Instagram, TikTok and Facebook is a cut-down webview — and on both iOS and Android, that webview frequently doesn’t expose those APIs, or exposes them inconsistently.

What that looks like in practice

  • The Apple Pay button never renders — not greyed out, just absent, as if the visitor’s device didn’t support it at all.
  • It renders but fails at confirmation — the sheet opens, then the payment silently doesn’t complete.
  • Saved cards don’t autofill either, so the fallback is a fully manual card entry — the highest-friction checkout path landing on the highest-friction browser.

How to confirm it’s actually this

  • Open your own checkout link from inside Instagram (not from Notes, not from a text to yourself) and see if Apple Pay appears.
  • Compare completion rate on traffic from Instagram/TikTok bios against traffic from email or a shared iMessage link — the gap is usually stark if this is happening.
  • Check for support messages that say some version of “the pay button wasn’t there” or “it wouldn’t let me pay”.

of in-app checkouts can stall specifically on a missing or failing wallet button

Illustrative — the real number depends on your audience and platforms.

Illustrative — the real share depends on how wallet-dependent your checkout is and how much of your traffic is in-app.
This isn’t a bug you can fix on the checkout page itself — Apple Pay and Google Pay only expose their APIs to the actual browser, not to a page rendered inside a webview. The fix has to happen before the checkout page loads: get the tap into Safari or Chrome first.

How Linkamy fits

  • Every actionable link hands the tap to Safari or Chrome — automatic on Android, one clean tap on iOS.
  • Apple Pay, Google Pay, saved cards and 3-D Secure all work normally once the visitor is in a real browser session.
  • Click analytics show device and source app, so you can see exactly how much of your traffic was arriving in-app before the fix.
