The problem

Google Pay Not Working in the Instagram Browser?

Your checkout shows Google Pay when you test it in Chrome. A customer arriving from Instagram or TikTok on Android sees no Google Pay button at all, and has to type in a card number instead.

Google Pay on the web depends on the browser exposing a payment API to the page. Chrome does. The embedded browser inside Instagram, TikTok and Facebook, called a webview, often does not, or only works if the app’s developers have turned it on. When it is missing, the checkout page can’t tell the customer has a wallet, so it hides the button.

What it looks like

  • The Google Pay button is missing, not greyed out. The page behaves as if the phone had no wallet.
  • The sheet opens and the payment doesn’t complete, or the page returns to the cart with no message.
  • Saved cards don’t autofill, so the customer has to type the card in by hand on a phone keyboard.
  • Different results on your own phone. You test in Chrome, everything works, and the problem only shows up for customers who come from social.

How to confirm it’s this

  • Open your checkout link from inside Instagram or TikTok on an Android phone with Google Pay set up. Not from Notes, not from a text to yourself.
  • Open the same URL in Chrome. If the button appears there, the page is fine and the webview is the cause.
  • Compare checkout completion for social traffic against email or direct traffic. A large gap points here.
You can’t switch Google Pay on from your checkout page. The browser has to expose it, so the fix is to get the customer into Chrome before the checkout loads.

What you can do

  • Make sure a card form works well on a phone. It is the fallback every in-app customer will use.
  • Ask customers to open the page in Chrome. The ⋯ menu has an “Open in Chrome” option, but most don’t find it.
  • Send the tap to Chrome automatically so the customer never lands on a checkout without a wallet.

How Linkamy fits

  • On Android, a Linkamy link hands the tap to Chrome with no visible step.
  • On iPhone it is one clean tap into Safari, where Apple Pay works. See our Apple Pay guide.
  • Click analytics show device and source app, so you can see how much traffic was arriving in-app.
