The problem

PayPal Not Working in the Instagram Browser? Why

The PayPal button is on your page, but customers who arrive from Instagram or TikTok get a blank pop-up, a login that won’t stick, or a payment that never comes back to your shop. The checkout is fine. The browser they tapped into is the problem.

PayPal is not a single form on your page. The button usually opens a second window where the customer logs in and approves the payment, then hands them back to your checkout. That hand-off is what a normal browser does well and what the in-app browser inside Instagram, TikTok and Facebook does unreliably. It is a cut-down webview: it can handle pop-ups badly, it keeps its own cookies, and it has no link to the customer’s saved logins.

What it looks like

  • The PayPal window opens blank, closes by itself, or never opens at all.
  • The customer is asked to log in again, even though they are signed in to PayPal in Safari or Chrome. The webview doesn’t share that session.
  • No saved password or Face ID prompt, so they have to type their PayPal password on a phone keyboard.
  • The payment goes through but the shop doesn’t know. The customer is not returned to your order confirmation, so they pay again or write to support.

The same applies to Venmo and other options that appear inside a PayPal checkout, since they run through the same hand-off.

How to check it’s this

  • Open your own checkout from inside Instagram or TikTok, not from Notes or a message to yourself, and try the PayPal button.
  • Open the same page in Safari or Chrome. If PayPal works there, the cause is the in-app browser.
  • Compare PayPal completion for visitors from social against email or direct traffic. A big gap points the same way.
  • Look through support messages for “the PayPal window was blank” or “I paid but got no confirmation”.
You can’t fix this inside your checkout page, because the limit is the webview, not your code. The fix is to get the customer into Safari or Chrome before the checkout loads.

What you can do

  • Offer a card option next to PayPal so a failed pop-up isn’t the end of the sale.
  • Tell customers to open the page in their browser. The ⋯ menu has an “Open in Safari” or “Open in Chrome” option, but few people look for it.
  • Move the tap into the real browser for them, so they never meet the broken pop-up.

How Linkamy fits

  • Actionable links open in Safari or Chrome: automatic on Android, one clean tap on iOS.
  • PayPal, saved logins and the return to your confirmation page then behave as they do on any other visit.
  • Click analytics show the device and the app each tap came from, so you can see how much of your traffic arrives in-app.
